Outlook 2010 "Not Responding"
I have Office 2010 32 bit (version 14.0.4536.1000) installed on an HP dv9000 notebook 64 bit w/ 4gb ram.  I continually have a problem with Outlook 2010 freezing with a "Not Responding" error message.  I upgraded the operating system to Windows 7 to see if that would help, but it still freezes up.  This happens numerous times a day.  It usually happens when I am composing an email but sometimes during the send/receive mode.

I have Office 2010 running on another computer (desktop 32 bit w/Vista) and it works flawlessly.

I see that several other posts attempt to address this without getting resolution.  Is this issue being worked on?

I apologize for the delay in responding.  I did not get a notification of your post.

I use a POP3 email account on both computers.  I have not tried a new profile.  I am not sure what you mean by that.  I have two email addresses on Outlook 2010.  As I previously mentioned, I have never had any issue with Outlook 2010 on the desktop computer that has only 1 gb of memory and is an older computer than my HPdv9000.

I think it is some sort of memory hogging issue on the HP.  When the Outlook 2010 gives the "Not Responding" error message, as it is ceasing to respond, the cooling fan on the HP spools up and if I look at the CPU usage, it is at 100% and stays there.

I have disabled several of the add-ins and it has not solved the problem.  Sometimes I can go for a day or two without an issue and at other times it goes "Not Responding" on every email I try to compose.  It also will not respond sometimes while downloading new emails.

I have the same exact issue. I have two computers, both run Win7. Laptop is a Compaq V6000 (1.6GHz processor, 1GB RAM, and Avira Anti-virus installed), desktop is a Dell Dimenson 2400 (1.4GHz, 1GB RAM, and Avira Anti-virus). The desktop is about 10 years old and runs Outlook 2010 flawlessly! But the laptop runs Outlook 2010 with a lot of frsutration. I've tried safe mode, disabling the add-ins, and nothing. It takes forever to delete an email, and even longer to retrieve the email. Even moving emails from one folder to another folder takes a few minuets, and it's just a small email, no attachments.

I don't understand why it'll works like a champ on the old PC but runs terrible on a fresh install of Win7. Please help, makes me want to throw the laptop off the balcony. Thanks!

I have further information.....

I have monitored the CPU usage and when Outlook 2010 is operating normally it is using 3-5% CPU usage.  When it goes into the "Not Responding", the CPU usage for Outlook jumps to about 50%.   I have left it running for several hours to see if it would resume normally but it does not.  You have to shut down Outlook and restart.

This is really aggravating!!!!

I am having this same issue on a Dell XPS desktop with a Pentium D processor and Windows XP MCE SP3. This happens when I try to delete any e-mail with an attachment and when I try to send/receive e-mail with an attachment. I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 on the computer, but this occurs even when I have Kaspersky completely shutdown. As Outlook is a fairly critical part of Office, one would expect it to have few bugs. It seems, however, to have the most of all of the programs in the Office 2010 Beta suite.

Does this happen even if you start Outlook in Safe Mode? (hold down CTRL while you click the icon) See if this helps: http://www.officeforlawyers.com/outlook/tsol.htm#safe

It is sad, but after several months of trying to solve the "not responding" problem with Outlook, I have to abandon the use of the program.  Having the problem occur dozens of times a day makes the program useless.  I have sent Microsoft "frown faces" with detailed descriptions of the problem and so far have not gotten any response.  I have tried every "solution" suggested in various forums with no success.  I have disabled ALL add-ins, set up new data files, reinstalled the program, done the repair function, started in safe mode...... nothing solves it.

I cannot find rhyme nor reason why it stops responding.  All I know is that the CPU usage jumps to 100% and the cooling fan spools up each time it stops responding.

I was asked yesterday to fill out a questionnaire about Office 2010 and there was no place to indicate problems encountered.  It was very interesting that the questionnaire asked if I had used Office 2010 phone support.  After many hours of searching, I cannot find a support phone number for Office.

I really like the program......when it works.

Obviously, Microsoft does not care.............

DO I SOUND FRUSTRATED??????

Ok.......I am all better now....

I THINK I have solved the problem.  Program has been working without a "not responding" for 3 days, a new record.

To solve it I did a SCANPST and found many errors in the .pst files.  To do a scan go to:C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 14 and scroll down till you find the scanpst.exe program and run it.  Run it several times as you may not fix all the errors on the first run through.  Be patient, if you have a lot of emails, it may take a while to do the scan, backup, and repair.

I have run the tried new profile, run scan, repaired, uninstall/reinstall, safe-mode, standing on one foot, run only on odd days...and nada.

When does it happen...it can happen any time but it almost always happens when pasting into an email or attaching items.  This is not exclusive to outlook2010 but any of the office 2010 apps.  This is not a serverside issue as my OWA and exchange connections from Outlook 03 and 07 works fine.  I have added some addons...tried removing them ...no effect.  fyi...I have turned off compatibility mode.   I am running this on win server2008r2.  I did install the win764bit version.  ESC is off, firewall is off

I am really ready to be done with these problems...all clients I am recommending that they avoid it for now....I would appreciate any recommendations!

Hi I had the exact problem, and here's the reason and fix! You have imported your outlook settings and .pst from an older version of outlook, this is fine until your .pst file reaches a certain size, then outlook 2010 stops working.

So, you need to change the .pst to the newer code, heres how.

1. Copy/backup your current .pst file, found in C:\Users\(username)\Documents\Outlook Files

2. delete your account in Outlook 2010 and create a new account ( this will give you a .pst file withthe new code)

3. If you want all your settings and history etc, open outlook, click file / open / import / import from another program or file / outlook data file (.pst)

4. browse to where you made your copy of your original .pst file click next

Once its copied all the info over you should have a fully working Outlook 2010 with all your info and a new code .pst file.

Hello,

I have seen this on three computers. One running XP, one Vista, one Win7. One running Outlook 2010, two running Outlook 2007.

The solution on all these machines was to remove AVG anti virus software and install another AV program.

As soon as AVG was removed, Outlook ran fine. Probably better than it had been for many months.

It may not be your solution but it certainly worked for us.

Good luck

I had the same problem with Symantec Antivirus.  I removed and Outlook 2010 ran like a champ on Windows 7, I-7 chip with 8GB RAM 64 bit.  I then loaded Microsoft Windows Essentials.  No problems in this platform.  Just some more hints for smart techies.  The machine with the problem was a clean machine. Windows7 fresh and fresh 2010 install.  A smaller machine with a fresh windows 7 install, but an upgrade from Office 2003 to Office 2010 did not exhibit these problems.  I think Microsoft is trying to have everybody switch to Windows essentials

Anyway I have just run a detect and repair and hoping that will solve my problem. Am running XP SP3 Home with 4 GB of Ram.

I too am joing the band of me too's

I bought a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 64 bit laptop last week running Windows 7 Pro and also bought at the same time a MS OFfice 2010 Pro Plus.  I also have a Compaq Presario 32bit desktop machine with the same software loaded on there.

Because of the phone I have - HTC HD2 I have had to install the 32 bit version of Office as the 64 bit version wont sync with Windows Mobile Device Centre - which is a known problem.

The lap top has the problem contstantly and the desk top has had it only once or twice but has been ok for a few days apparently.

I am getting very frustrated with this problem and I have tried to run scanpst.exe and it also keeps crashing.  I have created a new profile all to no avail.

Microsoft you need to sort this out as we, your customers, have made you a very rich company and you are not delivering the service we expect.

Same here. I'm using Outlook 2010 with Windows 7 64-bit. When the Reading Pane is open I get sporadic "Not Responding" reports, especually when I'm clicking between emails in my Inbox to highlight some to move to one of my Persoanl folders; when the Reading Pane is off, I don't. I've tried scanning the .pst file; creating new profiles, checking the Helvetica font (I don't have it), disabling all Add-Ins, restoring teh system to an earlier time, and every and any other "fix" that's in forums I've read. Never had this with 2007 or the outdated 2003 version we still use for work. There are enough people who have this issue, yet MS don't seem to want to fix it - or maybe they just don't know what the problem is. Time-consuming and very frustrating.

Hi Carol,

The SCANPST app is not for scanning outlook, it's for scanning Outlook data files such as your email archive. It doesn't scan outlook itself.

you don't have to shut down when getting the "not responding" message from outlook or the internet explorer.  Just click on the screen and it will turn "White" and usually return to normal within a 5 to 10 sec.
May 12th, 2011 12:31pm

I've had the same problem since buying a new Win7-64 machine, installing 32-but Office 2010 with Outlook 2010. Had this problem with Outlook 'not responding' for days at a time (until killed). Tried all of the things listed here, safe mode, Scanning the PST, making a new profile etc. Eventually it started to work, but now after 2 weeks it is frozen again.

But get this - I'm not even using it for email! I was, but after several days of frustration I went back to using my old trusty Eudora, which is working solidly and has for 8 years without a glitch. But I was using Outlook in its calendar function only. But it can't even do that without locking up...

Microsoft -- you have a serious problem here...

I have gone through the same problem for the last couple of days with Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Tried all of the above scanpst, frmcache.dat and outcmd.dat etc.

Finally decided to convert to Mozilla Thunderbird so imported mail from Outlook into Thunderbird.

Started to use Thunderbird  then found I could not open and view the message for one of my most recent emails. It was from a reputable source that has been sending newsletters for ages so not a 'dodgy' source.

Went back to Outlook but instead of trying to view any email went straight to the offending one and deleted it.

This has been the answer for me as so far everything is great and back to normal with Outlook.

Just one other thing I should add - when I went to permanently delete this mail item from my 'Deleted items' box then I had to turn off the viewer pane first otherwise Outlook locked up again.

It's thanks to your willingness to share your problems and solutions! I, for one, greatly appreciate it.

Hi,

I always thought that if you are running a 64bit system, then you needed the 64bit version of Office 2010?

Is anyone running the 64bit of Office and still having the same problems?

You can run 32-bit applications on 64-bit hardware as well as OS.  Microsoft actually recommends that you use the 32-bit version of Office 2010 on 64-bit machines due to incompatibilities with other software (the windows mobile phone sync problem as mentioned above), and also the benefits of having 64-bit office really only show themselves with crunching a lot of math, like using and calculating extremely large Excel spreadsheets.

I too have this problem with a users system and have not had any luck with the scanning trick.  This client is using Outlook 2010 connected to Exchange 2003 (SBS) and thusly it is an OST file instead of a PST file.  Errors were found, and repaired, however problem persists.  They are running Symantec Endpoint Protection.

As a request to future posters... thank you very much for posting that solutions worked, but please include at least a few details... this thread has many suggestions so "it worked" doesn't help identify solutions which fixed the problem.

I have exactly the same set and problem. Pulling my hair out now.

I have tried new profiles, files are not corrupted open and work fine on 32 bit computers, when I try it on a 64bit laptop - either will not open or goes non responsive straight away..........

I am trying to try your remedy but, i can't find scanpst.exe after i get to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 14.  where is it. I too have the not responding issue, again and again

February 19th, 2012 3:03pm

I ran Scanpst.exe on all my */psst files (searched C: drive to ensure I found them).  Some files still had errors on the second scan; they were all error-free on the third scan.  However, Outlook goes into "Not Responding" mode shortly after opening (I can click on one message).  Any other suggestions?  Could this be caused by a virus?

  Follow the steps below.

  1. Scan your PST/OST file with scanpst.
    1. Close outlook.
    2. Open control panel
    3. Click on Mail icon
    4. Click Datafiles
    5. Note down Filename and location as listed on screen. If you cannot see the full path then you may need to highlight the file and click open folder to view the location.
    6. Close the account settings and Mail Setup windows.
    7. Run ScanPST or ScanOST (depending if your datafile was an OST or PST file extension) from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OfficeXX (note the XX will be a number for the version you are running eg. 11  12  14)
    8. Browse to the file that you noted down in step 1.e Click Start
    9. Try Outlook.
  2. If problem persists then the most likely answer is that a add-in is blocking it.
  3. Start outlook in Safe mode.
    1. Click start > Run (WindowsKey + R)
    2. Type outlook /safe (do not include the )and press enter
    3. Outlook will now start without any add-ins
  4. Now start disableing add-ins until you find the culprit.
    1. In outlook 2010 follow http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/office-outlook-2010-add-in-manager/
    2. In outlook 2007 follow http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1959/outlook_2007_disabling_enabling_add_ins/
    3. Other versions google outlook {your version} add ins manager and find a how to doc.

Hope this helps

I was having the same issue with Outlook, and Word, and yesterday Excel started Not Responding.  I finally called my tech and he said it is an explorer issue (I am using explorer 9) and that because of the integration of Windows 7 and explorer to these programs it causes them to have too many messages to the programs and they can't handle all the messages so they stop responding (irritating!)

My tech recommended upload firefox and using it as my browser. I also set my system config to do a normal startup, and I haven't had any problems with the programs since. Sorry Microsoft.

Hopes this helps.

Thank you!! This worked for me too!! One thing to add, when the utility opens, you'll have to locate the .pst file associated to the Outlook profile. The typical location for this is in My Documents > Outlook Files

Thanks again :)

I agree with all the negative comments here as Microsoft does not have a resolution to this. I was having and still not having issues on my Vista64 bit box, Outlook 2007 system.

I bought (very big mistake) Outlook Professional 2010 and find issues in several of the program ranging from Outlook freezing up to Publisher having removed a number of good functions like auto updating linked pictures etc. Too many things to talk about as to Publisher and then a while back my Outlook started freezing up with no specific steps identified on my Outlook 32 bit Application. I did a chat help and get people from India and the first time some company (hired people from India) called Omni Tech instead of MS (who contracts with them and Sony does and on and on). After two days with Omni tech and 15 total hours and $120 added cost and 3:30 the next morning after 12 hours with them on my system, I WILL NOT use them again as I fixed the issue in 10 minutes after I got them off my PC. Then Yesterday I again got online in MS Chat help as you cannot find a number to call them and get No support from them on a new Office 2010 Pro package.

I tried to remove add-ins one by one and it seems to work for a while and then the freezing up issue comes up again and several of the add-ins didn't work anyways in 2010.

I brought my pst file over from 2007 and imported it and things went ok for a little while then the freeze up issues began and will not stop until you kill Outlook in task manager. I see inconsistencies in the solutions here where it seems to work for some and then not for others.

My tech yesterday from MS Chat and India (have fun finding this avenue of help on MS site) took my Publisher (from India) two of them one being the auto updating of a linked picture option not being there and the second one in Publisher with being linked to Access for tabled fields and not linked text boxes set as Times New Roman and finishing the mailing merge into a new publication and all the fonts come up with some kind of default font that even creating a normal.pub file does not get rid of this issue.

Office 2010 is full of issues and its not just Outlook but with Outlook this freezing up issue is critical to me also as I have to use it every day. I want to thank others on there who are trying to help as you will NOT get it from MS as seen here with no one identified as a tech from MS and the solutions seem to work for some and not others that are posted. You can't get an American to help you and there is no Phone number seen for tech support on any of the Office issues and you end up paying a great price when MS website sends you to Omni tech for support and then Google them and you will find 100's of unresolved issues dealing with them and it will cost you a great price to get NO help.

Open Source may be the best solution as the newer versions of Office are not acceptable and MS does not respond to this issue and the Publisher ones I have and I am tired of paying for people in India and Systems like Omni Tech support that cannot resolve the issues. In short, I don't think this will get fixed and am tired of the freeze up issues every day, all day long and everything is still working fine in 2007 but not 2010.

I have Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Edition.  I've gone to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 14 and scanned for any files called scanpst.exe or inbox repair tool and found NOTHING by that name.  However, I have done a search of all program files and come up with it that way.  Curiously, the little envelope icon for the program is broken, indicating there is a problem with the file.  When I try to run the diagnostic for each of the .dll files in this folder, I get a message that I don't have permission to repair, but I can run the diagnostic to see if there are any problems.  When I proceed with that instruction, I get a final dialogue box telling me that Microsoft has never heard of this file, can't find it and can't open it.

I am extremely annoyed that Microsoft has not posted a solution to this problem which has been ongoing for nearly 2 years according to this thread.  Any assistance from other dissatisfied users would be appreciated, obviously I'm not going to get any help from the vendor.

Hi

Yes, I'm running 64bit Office 2010 and 2013 on my 64bit Win 7 Pro.

Same issues as all the rest having this Office problem. Tried everything mentioned in this forum and NO results!!!

I'm just so fed up with this issue!!

November 20th, 2012 11:02am

Hi sherpa5250 - I even uninstalled my 64bit Office 2010 and 2013, installed 32bit, still the same issues!!!!!!

I even installed Office 2010 on it's own, tested, same crap and uninstalled 2010 and installed 2013, same crap.

I had the same problem,

SPECS
Acer Aspire TimelineX, Windows 7 (64 bit), Office 2010 Professional Plus (32 bit), Avira Antivirus, 8GB Ram, 500GB Hard Drive.
No Outlook addon's

ISSUES THAT MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THIS
(after these things I started having the Outlook problem)

- Sync issues with Samsung Kies program and Samsung Galaxy S3 (Sync's with my Outlook)
- Kies would not recognize my phone, would just hang trying to connect.
- Uninstalled/Reinstalled Samsung Kies multiple times
- Used Iobit Uninstaller to Uninstall Kies due to Kies being a hard to remove program (which I think removes registry entries and that might have caused a problem)
- Used "Windows Installer Clean Up" tool to try to remove the Kies program completely (which I think removes registry entries and that might have caused a problem)

PROBLEM
COULD
Open Outlook, view everything (without opening up email, contact, etc.), change views, receive mail, create a new email (but would not send).

COULD NOT
open items, send mail, create contact or calendar entry.
Outlook would freeze, turn white, would not respond, eventually had to close program.

UNSUCCESSFUL FIX ATTEMPTS
(Full restart each time)

- Avira antivirus turned off
- Repaired Microsoft Office from "Programs and Features"
- Repaired .pst files via scanpst.exe (I repaired each file until there were no errors)
- Increased forms cache ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919596 )
- Created a new "Profile" (I really did not want to go this rout, I just wanted to fix this profile)
- Disabled "Outlook Connector" for exchange/Office 365
- Reinstalled "Outlook Connector" for exchange/Office 365

SOLUTION
- agent44's fix, and
- Repaired Office 2010 through "Programs and Features"(which rebuilt the frmcache.dat and outcmd.dat files)

- I applied agent44's fix, but I still had the same problem until I did a Office 2010 Repair from the "Programs and Features" and then the frmcache.dat and outcmd.dat files were rebuilt from scratch.

Everything works perfectly now!!!

Thank you agent44!!!

- Increased forms cache ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919596 )
- Created a new "Profile" (I really did not want to go this rout, I just wanted to fix this profile)
- Disabled "Outlook Connector" for exchange/Office 365
- Reinstalled "Outlook Connector" for exchange/Office 365

SOLUTION
- agent44's fix, and
- Repaired Office 2010 through "Programs and Features"(which rebuilt the frmcache.dat and outcmd.dat files)

- I applied agent44's fix, but I still had the same problem until I did a Office 2010 Repair from the "Programs and Features" and then the frmcache.dat and outcmd.dat files were rebuilt from scratch.

Everything works perfectly now!!!

Thank you agent44!!!

"agent44's fix

Try this it fixed me up.

1.     Close Outlook

2.     Locate frmcache.dat and outcmd.dat with the locations listed below:

o    frmcache.dat

         Win 7/Vista  C:\Users\<alias>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FORMS

         Windows XP  C:\documents and Settings\<alias>\local Settings\application Data\Microsoft\FORMS

o    outcmd.dat

         Win 7/Vista  C:\Users\<alias>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

         Windows XP  C:\Documents and Settings\am094\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

3.     Rename both files frmcache.dat and outcmd.dat to .old

4.     Re-launch Outlook

Note:Hidden files and folders must be visible to locate this folder and rename the .dat file."

Here here!! I agree with you TOTALLY Lauriegav.  What does it take to get MS to fix anything!  I've tried,

1. deleting all Add-ins - doesn't work

2. Scanpst - found errors on my largest pst file, ran it twice... Maybe I need to scan some more...

3. Renamed "framecache.dat" and "outcmd.dat" files to .old

Now re-running Outlook but it's taking a LONG time... Again, perhaps large outlook.pst file.

If there is a limit to the file size of a .pst file, Why doesn't Microsoft publish that limitation???

Good luck everyone. As noted earlier, the SAME PROBLEM has been documented for 3 YEARS!

FYI, Dell laptop, x64, bought with Windows 7, current for ALL Windows, Microsoft, and Office updates! 8G RAM, 770G harddrive...

Run the SCANPST.EXE file on the Outlook.PST file and any other file with .PST extension. Not on the .dll files.

Run Windows Explorer "As Administrator" (right click Outlook exe file) AND change folder settings to VIEW all Hidden files, near the top of the folder options dialog box.

I too have gotten Outlook 2010 "not responding" for months.  I tried making a copy of my outlook data file then deleting my old account (as recommended by dweevil).  I set up a new account and tried to import the folders and data from old account to new account only to find my new account was a .pst and the old account was .ost.  Anyone know how to either convert .ost to .pst or to import directly from .ost to .pst?  Renaming the .ost file to .pst does not work.

I battled with a similar issue today using Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 64bit, it was constantly reporting Not responding and then Outlook would restart itself.

My problem maybe different as it seemed to happen when calendar reminders appeared, I tried all of the above suggestions but nothing worked.

Eventually I found it was a codec issue with l3codeca.acm causing the "play sound for new reminders" Outlook setting to crash Outlook.

For the moment I have just turned off this setting in Outlook -> Options -> Advanced -> Reminders, but I will look at fixing this corrupt codec.

Hopefully this will help someone else.

I have tried Agent 44's method it seemed to work great. Now whenever I move a email to a folder the email looks like it didn't move, but whenever I restart Outlook it is in the correct folder. Could this be due to the large amount of mail I am moving around all day?

Hi,

I tried to open open the outlook data files by running windows explorer as an administrator but when trying to select the file I get this message I get the message that 'Outlook data files must be opened from within Outlook.  Any advice appreciated.

Really really sick of the whole Microsoft experience at this stage.  I have just managed to set up Outlook through gmail- it would not set up until I discovered that I had generate a password on the apps option in gmail.  Discovered this after many days searching through help sites and trying fixes on help sites until a friend worked it out.  Oh and the Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office Professional that was meant to fix all the bugs which does not install - really great job Microsoft.

Hi,

I have managed to get as far as Scanpst.exe and opening it but there are no outlook files with an .pst or an .ost extension just .DLL and .exe and .dat.  When I tried to select any of these I got a dialogue box telling me they were read only.  Any advice appreciated

In case, if you are finding it difficult to repair your Outlook PST file using Scanpst.exe then visit mentioned link to repair your MS Outlook PST file in a very comfortable way. http://www.howtofixpstfiles.com/scanpst-exe.html

Hi belinda,

Before running scanpst, check if the PST file is present in the default location. The default location of PST file varies from one Outlook Version to another and also it depends on the Operating System.

Once you have found out the default location, check if the PST file is present. If present then run SCANPST.EXE again and check.

If SCANPST.EXE still fails to locate the PST file, then I would suggest you to create a new Outlook profile and start using Outlook afresh.

Other workaround is to find a third party software that can locate your PST file and repair it.

Hi,

To open Outlook data file from within Outlook 2010, follow these steps:

File--> Account Settings --> Data Files --> Open File Location.

Hope this helps.

This worked for me as Outlook 2010 would "not respond" when I tried to delete files after using a link in an email. Oh it would after a short interval of say 15 seconds. I found it helpful to copy the entire address of the data file so I could just paste it in when I had to run scanpst several times to get the file repaired.
